One of the latest scams is where a scammer has found out personal details then pretends to be a relative asking for a money to pay a bill. More creditility is added in that they can't use my own bank as the new phone number can't be used to authorise a payment (often after banks close on a Friday).

Below is an actual transcipt of a conversation recorded between a scammer pretending to be the daughter to contact her mum to ask for a £1875 bill to be paid and will pay you back on Monday. Names have been omitted and full permission was given to help people be more aware of this type of scam.

How do scammers get this information to try this scam? We will discuss this after this transcript.

Thankfully in this case the person realised this must be a scam and blocked any further conversation.

How do these scammers find out some personal details to attempt this fraud attempt?

Keep your personal details private on Facebook or other social media. In Facebook "Contact and Basic info" and "Family and Relationships" can be all too revealing.

So, ok, you only let friends see this information but have any of your Facebook friends been hacked? If they have then the hacker can look at the hacked persons friends and obtain a lot of their personal information.

Never respond to notifications that you and 99 others are tagged in a post. These are ofen used to promote other scams like crypto currency fraud and 'how you can see you has been looking at your profile'.

Never click on on 'is this you in the video?' message. This invariably leads to where it asks you to log in again with your password to see the video.

Personal note: I have seen three of these 'hi mum - new number' scams reported on Facebook by friends or in open groups in the last two weeks. I get about two a month of the 'is that you in the video' and at least once a week about being 'tagged with 99 others'.

If my daughter tried asking me for a sum like that via text or whatever for a new phone, she would receive a swift proverbial 'kick up the a$$e'

I would hope that any child of mine would be able to write better than that.

    "Who is this?"
    "Your eldest"
Why didn't alarm bells ring at that point?

Fortunately my offspring are very particular about writing in English not Gibberish.
